Needless to say, the graphics look archaic by todays standard. The HD version has the same look as the original version from two decades (!!) Ago. And there are many more options and possibilities within the game, like zooming in and out! I wad hesitant to upgrade from HD to DE a few years back - why upgrade a game that works so well? But it's like going from a black/white TV to a colored one. Unless your computer cannot handle DE, then you should definitely get DE IMO. The game is extremely nostalgic for me, so that's probably why I find the new one off putting.īut if you've never played it before than yeah, get the DE. It's hard to transition though, AoE2 on CD was one of the first video games I ever played and it was the first I bought, seeing it new is really jarring. Now, I'll admit, I just bought the DE so maybe I just need to let it grow on me. I bought the DE to play with friends, if it wasn't for that I would have stuck with the HD version. They're new and all that, but to me they look like they belong in a mobile game.

I really don't like the DE graphics, there's something about it that really turns me off it.

The menu too, yeah it's shitty menu design, but it just worked for the game. The low quality graphics fit in and worked really well with the atmosphere of the game. The original just had this really cool mysterious feeling to it. If it wasn't for multiplayer I'd say get the HD version, I just got DE today, and honestly really dislike it.
